Computer Maintenance, Basic

How do I perform basic maintenance on my computer to keep it running?

You need to perform the scan disk and defragmentation process at a minimum of every 60 days. If you load a lot of new programs you should do it more often

Steps to Scan Disk/Defrag on Windows 98

By using the control-alt-delete function close all running programs except systray and Explorer. Once that is completed, right click using your mouse on your desktop and choose "Properties". Go to the "Screen saver" tab, and Choose "none" for your screen saver while performing any maintenance. This would also apply to defragment and check for viruses using any anti-virus protection software.

After this is completed open "MY Computer", - You can find it on your desktop. Right click on the hard drive (usually C:) and choose properties. You should administer "disk Cleanup". This program will locate anything that can be safely deleted from your computer. Then Choose the "Tools Tab", start the Scan Disk or defragmentation processes.

The time that these take to complete varies on how many files and programs you have on your hard drive, or any other drive you wish to optimize.
