Computer Terminology

  • Web Browser - Most computers come packaged with them. This would be programs such as Netscape, Internet or Internet Explorer.

  • If the address bar is not showing press the "Tools" Menu on the top, and check all the toolbars

  • A web address looks like this: http://www.goboyntonbeach.com


  • Application A program or software that tells the computer to do what you want it to do. Microsoft Word would be a good example


  • Browser A software program for viewing HTML pages on the Internet or on an intranet.


  • Button Usually a graphic element on a web page that executes an action - This is like saying "Go" to your computer. Clicking a button will submit a form, or do what you want it to do when you click on it with your mouse.


  • Cache A temporary storage area that a web browser uses to store text and graphics. When the web page is revisited the web browser will quickly retrieve the data from the cache instead of downloading it again to save time


  • Cursor A small image on your computer screen that moves in correspondence with your mouse and marks your place on the screen.


  • FAQ Frequently Asked Questions - Answers to commonly asked questions gathered into one location


  • Firewall Computer hardware and/or software that limits access to a computer over a network or from an outside source. Used to prevent hackers from getting into a company's computer system.


  • Hyperlink Also called hypertext or link. An icon, graphic or word on a web page that when clicked with the mouse, automatically link the user to another web page on the web.


  • Internet A large loosely organized integrated network of computers connecting individuals, universities, research institutions, government, businesses, and other organizations so that they can share information.


  • Intranet A web of pages, software and hardware for internal company use only


  • Mouse A device attached to a computer that can be moved across a surface, such as a desk to control the movement of a cursor on a computer screen. Also used to activate hyperlinks and applications.


  • Password A code used to gain access to a locked system. Keeps information secure.


  • Scroll To look at the parts of the page that fall below or above what you see on your screen. The long bar at the far right of your computer screen is a scroll bar. Click on the up or down arrow to move the page.


  • Search Engine A program that searches the web for documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found


  • URL Uniform Resource locator - also commonly called a location or address. This is an addressing system that identifies documents on the Internet or on an Internet. The BURL appears under your browser buttons.


  • Web Used as a synonym for the Internet (World Wide Web and "The Web"), "web" can also refer to pages and sites on an entrant It encompasses the use and application of network technology.
